Each figure in this pair tells a story older than memory itself. The groom, turbaned in deep crimson and draped in ceremonial green, rides a white ceremonial horse adorned in gold-trimmed regalia and a pleated red skirt — an unmistakable symbol of auspicious procession. His bride, resplendent in teal and gold with jewelled hair, rides a pink companion horse skirted in regal violet, her posture one of quiet dignity and festive joy. The craftsmanship follows a meticulous multi-stage process unique to the Kondapalli tradition: the lightweight Tella Poniki wood is first carved into form, then coated with a paste of china clay and tamarind seed to create a smooth, luminous base. Each detail — the pleated skirt folds, the horses' expressive faces, the riders' ornaments — is then hand-painted using vivid pigments applied with fine brushes, a skill passed down within artisan families across five centuries. As a pair, these figurines carry immense placement versatility — equally at home on a curated console, a festive altar, a heritage bookshelf, or as the centrepiece of a collector's display. Their vibrant palette holds warmth against dark wood interiors, and their cultural resonance makes them among the most meaningful gifting pieces in the Indian folk art canon.
